Câu 14 (Listening Part 2) của Aptis cho bạn nghe bốn người nói về cùng một chủ đề. Trên màn hình là dòng hướng dẫn: "Four people are discussing their views on the topic above. Complete the sentences. Use each answer only once. You will not need two of the answers." Bạn nối mỗi người với 1 trong 6 ý, thừa 2 ý. Bốn điểm này không khó nếu bạn biết hai điều: đáp án luôn là từ đồng nghĩa, và gần như người nào cũng nhắc thêm một ý gây nhiễu.
Quy tắc 1: nghe từ đồng nghĩa, đừng chờ nghe đúng chữ

Quy tắc 2: ý thật đứng sau "but", "so", "instead"
Người nói thường mở đầu bằng một ý của người khác hoặc một thói quen cũ, sau đó mới nói ý của mình.
- Protect the environment, người 1: mở đầu chê việc cho đồ cũ ("giving away old items a bit hypocritical"), sau đó mới nói "I do this by not purchasing chemical cleaning solutions". Đáp án: Does not use commercial cleaning products, không phải Give away used items.
- Protect the environment, người 3: nhắc túi tái sử dụng và việc lái xe, nhưng chốt bằng "But I have a principle of only buying eco-friendly products".
- Listening to music, người 1: "I see a lot of people listen to music right when they wake up… So, I just listen to music to relax." Đáp án To relax, còn After waking up thuộc về người 2.
- Outdoor activities, người 3: "I used to love mountain biking… so I've decided to just go hiking instead." Đáp án Climbing.
- Outdoor activities, người 4: bố khuyên cưỡi ngựa nhưng "I'm very afraid of this animal… Instead, I prefer mountain biking".
- Travel to work, người 3: "I used to use my car… I always go there on foot. I have a friend who cycles." Đáp án Walk alone: xe hơi là quá khứ, đạp xe là người bạn.
Quy tắc 3: loại 2 ý thừa trước khi nghe
Hai ý thừa thường lạc đề rõ ràng. Trong bài The place to run là "At the supermarket" và "In the library". Trong bài Listening to music là "To discuss ideas" và "To complain". Gạch chúng đi trong 20 giây đọc đề, bạn chỉ còn 4 ý cho 4 người.

Lưu ý: chủ đề Protect the environment có hai phiên bản. Bản 1 là bốn ý reuse containers, give away, eco-friendly products, no chemical cleaning. Bản 2 là shopping online, not driving to work, using less electricity, using less water. Người thi ngày 29/5 và 13/5 gặp bản 2 với thứ tự người nói bị đảo.
